TAPE 3

Regular classroom instruction in subjects such as science, social studies, and physical education has traditionally been bound by set curriculums and teaching methods that make modifications difficult to implement and assess. This videotape will amaze teachers with a vast array of modification ideas, strategies, and activities that can easily be incorporated into subject area instruction.

The specific subject areas addressed include:

  • Social Studies--ideas for instructing basic map skills and map reading.
  • Physical Education--various activities that allow the disabled student to partially participate with the whole class in a given activity.  Some examples deal with adaptation or modification of rules, equipment, and methods of participating.
  • Science--suggestions for improving sequencing, grouping, and memorization of information using "strip story" strategies, as well as modification suggestions for laboratory activities.  Other modifications pertain to class discussion activities, such as preparing students to participate, increasing student participation and attention, and defining predetermined signals for students.  Ideas for introducing and improving content vocabulary with students are also included.
