Welcome to our spring/summer newsletter for disability professionals. What a nice time of year this is! The sweltering heat of midsummer is not yet here, yet the temperature allows us to shed the heavy clothes of winter. Therefore, we thought we would complement the mild weather and start our newsletter with a light conundrum; What do the New York Yankees, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest and Wal-Mart have in common? The answer: all three are featured stories that equal good news for people with disabilities. The “Bronx Bombers” hit a home run with a brand new super accessible Yankee Stadium; part of the old “cuckoo’s nest” hospital in Oregon has been torn down, and a Georgia Wal-Mart is receiving praise for hiring a person with disabilities and his service dog. In addition to these stories we have also included PDA News, a sports story on the “ultimate fight” and, of course, disability resources related to each.

American Recovery & Reinvestment Act: Your organization or school has an exciting opportunity allowing you to facilitate professional development and narrow the opportunities gap for children and adults with disabilities under the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act. As this federal stimulus funding may be a one-time opportunity it is important to make wise investments supporting positive outcomes that will last for many years. QUOTE OF THE MONTH

"I guess I just view it as a part of our past; and now it's time to move on."
--Roy Orr, superintendent of the Oregon State Hospital, talking about the part of the building where the movie "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" was filmed. That part of the building is being destroyed this week (1st story)

"These are great fans; some of them are our most passionate fans. They should have the exact experience as everybody else. So maybe it's not needed, maybe it's not so practical, but it's the right thing to do."
--New York Yankees team President Randy Levine, whose new stadium is being hailed as a model in accessibility (3rd story)

INSTITUTIONS / HISTORY
Oregon Tears Down Part Of 'Cuckoo's Nest' Hospital
(Victoria Advocate)
April 9, 2009

SALEM, OREGON-- [Excerpt] Workers on Monday began tearing down part of the Oregon State Hospital building where Jack Nicholson played a rebellious patient in the 1975 film classic "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest."

Part of the 125-year-old building will be preserved, though, and it will include a mental health museum to exhibit props from the film, including a "hydrotherapy" device that one character throws through a window to make his escape.

"It's the thing that many people remember about the movie," said hospital spokeswoman Patricia Feeny.

The movie based on Ken Kesey's 1962 novel was fictional, but it has become closely associated over the years with real-life problems at Oregon's crumbling, overcrowded psychiatric facility.

EMPLOYMENT / SERVICE ANIMALS
Wal-Mart Employee Loves Job Amid Economic Struggles
(Rome News-Tribune)
March 26, 2009

SUMMERVILLE, GEORGIA-- [Excerpt] In these days with mounting layoffs and cutbacks, one wonders whether anyone can truly love his job.

Spann Cordle, 50, a resident of Summerville, not only loves his job, but credits it for giving him new opportunities to help others: acting as a spokesperson for those in need of service animals.

Sam’s Club, a Wal-Mart affiliate, picked Cordle to be featured in a service animal video sponsored by the Ralston Purina pet food company. The video aired at the annual Sam’s Club management conference in Kansas City in February and Cordle attended to tell his story.

Cordle, a man with cerebral palsy who works at the Summerville Wal-Mart, relies on Finn, his Black Labrador Retriever service dog, to help him through the workday -- and more.

ACCESSIBILITY
New Yankee Stadium A Model Of Accessibility
(MLB.com)
April 16, 2009

NEW YORK, NEW YORK-- [Excerpt] The new Yankee Stadium isn't just a cutting-edge facility, it is a groundbreaking new venture in accessibility.

After collaborations with the Department of Justice and other private groups that cater to people with disabilities, the stadium was deemed an exemplary model in going beyond the ground rules stated in the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

"When we set out with this stadium, one of our top priorities was making this program state of the art in accommodating people with disabilities," team president Randy Levine said.

On Tuesday morning, the Yankees made good on their promise, unveiling a facility that caters to patrons with physical challenges in the most innovative way possible.

SPORTS
No Elbows, No Knees, No Problem For 'Ultimate Fighter'
(USA Today)
April 23, 2009

AUBURN, ALABAMA-- [Excerpt] Light-heavyweight Steve Cantwell jokingly told me last week that he wouldn't mind fighting someone without arms.

Too bad he can't make the cut to 135 pounds.

Kyle Maynard -- described as a "congenital amputee" -- was born without elbows, hands, knees or whole feet, but with plenty of athletic ambition. He compiled a 35-16 record as a high school wrestler and won an ESPY in 2004 for "best athlete with a disability." USA TODAY profiled him in 2004, going so far as to label him "The Ultimate Fighter" in the days before the term became associated with Spike TV's reality show.

He has a book and a documentary. He opened his own gym in December.
