Willowbrook Activist Looks Back, 35 Years Later
(NY 1)
June 8, 2010
HARLEM, NEW YORK-- [Excerpt] Shortly after Willie Mae Goodman's daughter, Margaret, was born in the mid 1950s, doctors insisted that her mentally disabled baby wouldn't live to be a toddler.
They told her that the best thing to do was to put her baby girl in Staten Island's Willowbrook State School and basically forget about her.
"They thought they were just keeping them alive -- no life," Goodman said.
Offended, Goodman rolled up her sleeves and started a grassroots movement to fight for all children who were institutionalized in the notoriously overcrowded and understaffed facility.
Margaret is now 54 years old. Goodman, almost 80, is still on the front lines of that battle.

Deborah Kendrick: Straightforward Descriptions Are Best
(Columbus Dispatch)
June 10, 2010
CINCINNATI, OHIO-- [Excerpt] I feel myself bristling as the word consumer is used for the fourth or fifth time in our keynote speaker's informative address. The context here is clear. The meeting is one of professionals who manage radio and other audio services that deliver print materials in an audio format to people who can't access them in the conventional way.
Consumer here, in other words, means someone who is blind, has limited vision or has other physical or learning disabilities that make reading the typical newspaper impossible or complicated.
But why the label consumer?
It is just one of various terms employed in the last decade or so in the quest launched by agencies and schools serving people with disabilities to find a politically correct reference for the population addressed. There is nothing inherently wrong with the word consumer, but the shorthand it represents is irritating to me.

21st Century Communications And Video Accessibility Act Moves Forward In Congress
(American Foundation for the Blind)
July 21, 2010
WASHINGTON, DC-- [Excerpt] Today, less than a week away from the 20th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the House Energy & Commerce Committee approved H.R. 3101.
This measure, also known as the Twenty-First Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act, updates our nation's communications laws to ensure that new technologies are accessible to people with disabilities.
In addition to Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.), the original sponsor and champion of this legislation, we applaud Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA), Rep. Rick Boucher (D-Va), Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX), and Rep. Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.) for leading this bipartisan effort. Once signed into law, this legislation will dramatically improve the lives of the more than 25 million Americans with vision loss by ensuring expanded access to the technologies of the 21st century, including television, the Internet, and smart phones.
We expect the House to take up the bill next Monday on the 20th anniversary of the ADA. This will be a fitting commemoration of this landmark law -- often called the Emancipation Proclamation for people with disabilities. Once passed, we will implore the Senate to promptly pass H.R. 3101.

Making Recruiting Sites Accessible For All
(Society for Human Resource Management)
June 2, 2010
ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA-- [Excerpt] The U.S. Department of Labor is sending employers an important message: "Talent has no boundaries; workforce diversity includes workers with disabilities." As employers begin to hire once again, therefore, they had better make sure that applicants with disabilities can find and compete for jobs just like everyone else.
DOL's message is actually the 2010 theme for October's National Disability Employment Awareness Month, an annual opportunity to remind employers that there's a large pool of talent waiting to contribute. According to April 2010 figures from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, less than a quarter of the potential labor force of Americans with disabilities are employed (22 percent), compared with more than two-thirds of the labor force without disabilities (70 percent).
In order to tap into this population, however, employers need to make sure that their entire recruitment process is accessible. That can be tricky, because an estimated 15 to 20 percent of the U.S. population has a disability that might affect their ability to use technology, according to LaMondré Pough, vice president of sales for TecAccess, a technology company in Rockville, Va.

Deborah Kendrick: When One Discloses A Disability Can Make All The Difference
(Columbus Dispatch)
May 26, 2010
CINCINNATI, OHIO-- [Excerpt] To disclose or not to disclose, that is the question.
It's the question people with disabilities ask themselves when there is an option of keeping one's visible difference a secret. Sure, it is sometimes a benefit, but all too often it means being counted out before you begin.
It was a question I asked myself as a teenager, filling out applications for college. My guidance counselor said it had to go on there, and luckily for me, the college admissions people weren't as tough as many of their peers around the country.
Many students in the 1960s and '70s were denied entrance to their chosen colleges because of inaccurate assumptions about what it meant to have trouble seeing or hearing or walking up the stairs.
