Skilled Technical Careers
Pursuing a college degree is not the only option for young people. Instead, it is a cultural norm that has become the go-to option for those who need more education, engagement, and time to decide on a career path. Skilled careers are a viable option for young people that are often lost in the overwhelming societal push towards the college experience.
There are many ways to transition into a skilled career as a young person. Apprenticeships, work-based learning programs, and associate’s degrees are just three ways to pursue opportunities for employment. These paths are each explored in the Succeeding Without College DVD resource from Program Development Associates. This indispensable resource helps viewers consider the abundant alternatives to college and decide which option is best.
Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships are an excellent way to link employers with individuals who are ready to dive into the workplace. The Internet has become a valuable resource for employers to post apprenticeship opportunities, and for young people to find apprenticeship opportunities in their field of interest.
Work-Based Learning
Work based learning takes a hybrid approach to education, combining traditional the traditional learning environment with hands on work experience. This provides the ideal environment for individuals to showcase their abilities, as well as to learn firsthand whether or not a particular work environment is aligned with their personal values and abilities.
Associate’s Degree
The Associate’s Degree is perfect for the individual who does not want to pursue a four year undergraduate college degree but nonetheless has a particular field that they wish to study. Moreover, individuals who choose this path will be well positioned to transition to a college to attain an undergraduate degree if they so choose.
Making the change from teenager to young adult is difficult, and choosing the correct opportunity is critical. The Succeeding Without College DVD is an essential resource for young adults who are considering alternatives to a college education. In this program, you will see the struggles teens face with Bulimia Nervosa and Anorexia Nervosa from individuals that have suffered from this affliction and survived. For reasons unclear, some people, mainly young women, develop potentially life-threatening eating disorders called bulimia nervosa and anorexia nervosa.
People with bulimia, known as bulimics, indulge in binging (episodes of eating large amounts of food) and purging (getting rid of the food by vomiting or using laxatives). People with anorexia, whom doctors call anoretics, severly limit their food intake. About half of them also have bulimia symptoms.
Bulimia is also a very deadly physical illness as intentionally purging causes many debilitating effects including severe teeth erosion, tears of the esophagus, life threatening potassium imbalances and more. More than 20% die from complications relating to their eating disorders.
Anorexics similarly are affected by their illnesses in many ways ranging from fatigue and lack of energy, amenorrhea( loss of menstruation), loss of bone mass and even cardiac arrest and death.

The statistics on teen depression are sobering. Studies indicate that one in five children have some sort of mental, behavioral, or emotional problem and that one in ten of these problems are serious. Among adolescents, one in eight may suffer from depression. Of all these children and teens, a mere 30% recieve any sort of intervention or treatment. The other 70% simply struggle through the pain of mental illness or emotional turmoil, doing their best to make to adulthood.
The consequences of untreated depression can range from increased incidence of depression in adulthood, involvement in the criminal justice system, or in some cases, suicide. Suicide is the third leading cause of death among young people ages 15 to 24. Even more shocking, it is the sixth leading cause of death among children ages 5-14. The most troubling fact is that these struggling teens often recieve no counseling, therapy or medical intervention, even though the National Institute of Mental Health reports that studies show treatments of depression in children and adolescents can be effective.
